Review by Nathan Stuart ★★★★ 5
Takita (Ken Takakura), is the second in command of the Yamazaki Family, who under the leadership of Boss Yamazaki (Seizaburo Kawazu), are locked in an escalating war with rivals, The Gondo (Kei Sato). With tit for tat killings dominating the news and violence spilling into the streets, the Yamazaki's lawyer, Gunji (Rentaro Mikuni), tries various methods to mediate between families and put an end to the conflict. But old rivalries and stubborn leaders aren't willing to let go, putting Takita in an awkward position as he tries to juggle his morality, Yakuza duties and his newly found love, Yuki (Yukio Toake), whilst suffering from radiation poisoning.
'Glorious Fights' (such an odd title), is anything but a 'typical Yakuza movie', while…

Review by dirtylaundri ★★★½
Routine Yakuza plotting elevated by a great Takakura performance and lots of small directorial grace notes. Takes until the last 5 minutes to arrive at something truly special (that travelling montage!), though.

Routine Toei Yakuza stuff, but the last fifteen minutes would have made a good standalone short film.

"Is that the only thing you can do?"
It is bleaker and somehow sadder than typical Toei yakuza flicks.
Existential clash between giri and mortality. Quite noir-ish. -
Review by rjtougas ★★★½
A honourable and lovelorn gangster struggles with his attraction for an innocent woman and his growing understanding of his yakuza boss's indifference to their code. By its conclusion, Glorious Fights is exceptionally melodramatic and wonderfully tragic in its ambitions, almost combining the poetic realism of the 1930s with the swooning romance of the 1950s. Is radiation sickness to yakuza films what tuberculosis is to the Western - a kind of hallmark for the sensitive hero doomed to an early demise?

Review by Ed Küpfer ★★
Ken Takakura plays a yakuza lieutenant who becomes disillusioned when his boss breaks the honourable yakuza code. There are many dozens of these types of movies, and this one doesn't add anything original or fun.
